Tomorrow I'm teaching Sunday School, the Gospel Doctrine class for adults. I'm terrified! I can do a lot of things, and I am not without talents. I can cook, sew, sing, teach people to sing, read, sing, pack people's boxes when they're moving, direct choirs, write down flute and violin parts that I hear on a CD, clean toilets, and sing. So my talents are not very varied (cool rhyming there, huh?), but I'm OK with it.
It doesn't help my anxiety that possibly the best Gospel Doctrine teacher in the whole worldwide LDS church lives in my ward. And the guy that taught before him, I said the same thing every week after he finished his lessons. We have great scholars of scriptures in our midst. But when one has a hip replaced, who do they call to sub for him? Yup, that's it folks, yours truly.
My point is this though....I really need to study the scriptures more. It's been a totally amazing week, studying the new testament every day, reading supplemental material, and preparing the lesson. Yes, my motivation and main goal is to avoid total humiliation, but the nice side effect is that it has taken my thoughts in a whole different direction and given me insights and understanding about everything from using my time, praying, and yes, even singing. And no, I have not spent an exorbitant amount of time on it, and my children have remained fed, clothed, and my house is no more a disaster than it was last week at this time.
So try this...take out your scriptures and pick a section, and pretend that you are teaching a group of about 60 adults a lesson on it. See what happens.

Hi Rachel! I don't know if you have ever noticed in your blog traffic that there's some weirdo from France that "blog stalks" you, but it's acutally me: your long-lost, used-to-live-across-the-street neighbor, Tiffany (Black) Pierce. I saw your blog from Melanie Hegewald's blog, and I am so sad she never blogs anymore.
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed reading your posts, and it's great you still have so many singing opportunities. You always had such an amazing voice (you and Debbie Hansen were my faves).
As far as Sunday School goes, I am sure you will do a great job today. (Church is long over for me, since I am 8 hours ahead of Utah time.) At least you get to give your lesson in English. In may ward here in Cannes, I am in the Primary Presidency, and it's so hilarious whenever I have to conduct or do anything that invloves communication. I have the most terrible French you have ever heard. I miss English so much.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and tell you how glad I am that things are going so well for you. Your NY trip looked fun too!
Ciao,
Tiffany
