NC State Fair

As I was looking at those pictures of Lizzy's birthday, I remembered that they weren't taken on her ACTUAL birthday, but I couldn't for the life of me remember why that was. Was Matt out of town? No. Was Grandma out of town? No. Was Lizzy sick on her birthday? Nope, that wasn't it either. Then it dawned on me. We went to the fair. On her first birthday. And left her at home with Grandma and Grandpa. So, sorry again Lizzy, but this is how we celebrated your birthday. As usual for my posts, these are out of order. We actually had the ice cream last, just before we left. NC State makes the BEST ice cream.

Samuel and Lucy on the yo-yo.

OK, pay attention to how many people are at this fair, it's important for a story I'll tell later.

Samuel was a huge complainer and whiner that night for some reason, so when something finally made him happy I had to capture it.

I was trying to figure out what I wanted to eat (a major decision at the NC fair) I found a NEOMONDE booth! Neomonde is my all time favorite Lebanese deli, so even though it's not traditional fair fare (cool play on words!!), I really enjoyed my chicken wrap.

Roasted corn, YUMMY. Note Samuel's face, this is how he looked the majority of the evening.

Here I am with Samuel. Even though he's a pill, I just love his guts.
Matt and Lucy getting ready to ride the crazy caterpillar.

Mason was totally happy on the yo-yo, until the attendant stuck quite a large GIRL next to him.
Here's Mason with his corn and giant turkey leg. He should have taken the foil off, it reminds me of something a caveman would eat. Here's Lucy with her corn dog. We all ate different stuff for dinner.

Here are the kids with their candy apples. They didn't admit it, but I think the kids were actually kind of disappointed with them. Mason's chocolate one was totally yucky waxy chocolate, and the blue candy was ROCK HARD. Lucy's cotton candy was good though.
Here's the guy selling turkey legs, one of hundreds of vendors selling the same thing.
Taking a quick picture with the silly board.

The most beautiful cloudy sky ever!
Another cool pic from up in the ferris wheel.
Boys with hands up.
Figuring out if they were tall enough. Lucy was right on the border at times.

OK, look closely at our faces, this is time for the scary story of the night. On the way out of the fair, we stopped for a drink or something, I turned around and Lucy was gone. I didn't panic at first, but Mason was screaming in hysterics, "LUCY! HELP, I CAN'T FIND MY SISTER!!" Well, after probably one minute that felt like ten, we started to freak a little . Then another minute of looking and I was starting to think, OMG...maybe she's really gone. A nice vendor with a microphone started calling her name, and nice people were trying to help look for a needle in a haystack. A lady was just about to report it when we found her. It wasn't until she actually showed up that I started crying. I know it's happened at least in a small degree to every parent, but this was really a nightmare come true. We're so thankful we found her and were able to go home with the same number of kids we arrived with. So, NC State Fair, we love you but we need a break and are glad you won't be back until next October.

  1. Just reading that experience makes my heart drop. I can only imagine your terror! I remember a few years back losing a kid in a super Walmart for over 30 minutes, and I know the terror I felt then could have only been a fraction of yours, especially with all those people.
